u2october's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- mineral wells I think everyone should have the experience of going on a camping trip where everything goes wrong. This past weekend, I took my 14 year old nephews, Brett and Jonathan, camping at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. If you live in the DFW area, you already know it poured down rain all weekend long. I knew it was probably going to rain this weekend, but I was hoping to get out there and set up camp before the rain set in. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans. It was already pouring rain when we got out there, and it was dark. My family is not the turn around and go home type, so we went right to work, attempting to get the mammoth 6 person tent set up. After 2 hours in the rain, we finally got the tent up, only to discover that it had holes in it, which is not very rain friendly. We then pulled out our backup tent, a 3 person dome tent. After setting up the dome tent inside the big tent, we thought we were finally safe from the rain. That's when the tent started taking on water like an old canoe. We then took refuge inside my Ford Focus for the remainder of the evening. The next morning, we decided to take a refreshing hike in the light drizzle. This turned out to be the one shining moment. The lake was beautiful. When we returned to camp, we set up the coleman propane stove, as there was a ban on fires, which was amusing, given the torrential downpour we experienced the night before. No sooner had we cooked our hotdogs, when it started to rain heavily. At this point, we finally said to hell with it, and packed our shit and left. We went back to my apartment where we watched U2: The Vertigo Tour, which rocked to the extreme. All in all, it was fun despite the adversity, and it was an experience my nephews will never forget.
