Just an addition, I had to add a rebuttal to Ryan's statement that civil rights would never have happened without Lincoln. That is partly correct. Civil Rights would never have happened if Lincoln lived because according to his own writings, his idea was to ship the Negros back to Africa because he felt they would never be considered equal citizens. When he realized that shipping them back wasn't going to happen, he wanted to insure that whites were still given preferential treatment. It's all in Lincoln's own writings, but textbooks don't cover that.
